Hey guys, I’m studying and prepping for camp this summer. I was wondering if any of you pastors or serious studiers have a commentary you like for the Gospel of John? I have the one by Donald A. Carson. But that’s it so far. Thanks.

The Gospel According to John (The New International Commentary on the New Testament) by Leon Morris and Exposition of the Gospel of John by Arthur Pink (3 volumes in 1) are two of my favorites.
Since it is for youth, check out John For Everyone by Tom Wright. Lead several studies using the material for my youth.
Not as deep as Pink’s. Moody Gospel Commentary – John by Carl Laney. GREAT book used at a pretty conservative Bible Institute! Have fun!
I personally like the Commentary made by W. Hall Harris, you can find it at http://bible.org/byauthor/18/W.%20Hall%20Harris%20III
Morris’ Commentary in the New International Commentary on the New Testament series is one of the best…its one of the best series all around. Also the Word Biblical Commentary on John by George Beasley-Murray is pretty good. Really depends on the level of depth your looking for. Also the NIV Application Commentary on John by Gary Burge is a good and fairly easy to read book.
David Guzik (a Calvary Chapel pastor now in Germany) offers a verse-by-verse commentary at blueletterbible.org. You can access it from anywhere and not have to worry about lugging a book around with you.
I tend to start with the Word Biblical Commentary, but have this on my to read list and I think it would really help with your prep for this summer
The Gospel of John: When Loves Comes to Town by Paul Metzger

Vernon J McGee’s Through the Bible is a good commentary.
Not to bash commentaries, because they have their place and can give us much insight from other’s hard work, but like the people who got to hear God’s voice at the foot of the mountain and insisted they’d rather hear from Moses, I think it is easy to listen to other people and forget to listen to God, so…
may I suggest getting Green’s interlinear Bible – it is in the original language with English counterparts under each word and a Strong’s concordance number above each word. (He also has an English translation in the margin in English word order).
I have found having the original with definitions at my fingertips helps when there are so many translations out there with so many different interpretations of the same word – Strongs will give you insight and often linguistical context.
As you read it ask God to speak to You and study, study, study! 🙂
Hello Todd, During the years 1978to 1981 i went to Harvard Divinity School. One of my theology professors selected topics for an oral exam on the Gospel of John. A few friends of mine picked the topic , MISUNDERSTANDINGS IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. We picked this because we thought if we gave the wrong answer we could say that we misunderstood! Anyway I know that is not the commentary you were probably looking for, but I thought it was food for thought, the whole idea of misunderstandings in the gospel of john. The professor was amazing Oh yes one amazing commentary on the Gospel of John, actually the Passion of the Gospel of John is a musical one, by J.S. Bach. His choral work of the St. jOHN PASSION is awesome. I got to sing it once . When Christ died I fainted during the performance. The harmonic shift when he dies is such a release I actually did faint on stage. Thank you for the ministry of your music Todd. I am moving to Ashevile nc and look forward to your concerts in North Carolina in October
John Macarthur has a really good comentary on John it is pretty deep so you would have to break it down quite a bit for your students.
