When I think about Dana Key, I remember many things. I remember being a
teenager with a mullet rocking out in my room to the songs of Degarmo & Key.
I connected with the music, but even more, I connected with a longing to not
be a Casual Christian, to be Rock Solid, and probably even more I wanted to
connect with my Blessed Messiah.
I remember being told that Dana had heard me play and wanted to go to lunch.
I couldn’t believe that someone I had looked up to so much had seen
something of value in me. And I remember at that lunch that he wasn’t
impressed by any of the sheen of Christian music, but he deeply loved the
Christ that the music was about.
I remember him coming in and listening to the first record. He heard the
songs on Grace Like Rain and told me that more people needed to be touched
by these songs than the few people I would run into at church and youth
camp. I will never be able to express how much it meant that he believed in
me.
I remember him as a pastor. I was so impressed that a musician had that
kind of concern for theology and for the people of his city. He loved Jesus
and wanted Memphis to find healing in Him.
But my most vivid memory is of a really difficult day in my life a few years
ago. I had just been torn up by a promoter. It was the first time in my
life that my integrity was questioned. I was devastated and angry, and I
had no idea what to do. I sent Dana an email, expecting an email in return,
or maybe even a phone call. But just a little while later, I got a call
from Dana, telling me to come over to his house. I can still see the
backyard, as we sat by the big tree behind his old farmhouse. And he sat
with me.
What I remember the most is not a piece of advice he gave, is not a song he
wrote, or a guitar part he played. I remember that when I was hurting, he
stopped what he was doing and brought me to his home, to a safe place. And
he listened. And he prayed.
Dana Key loved Jesus. And he loved people. I was fortunate enough to be
one of those people.
God, I will always be grateful that you chose for my life to be impacted by
this man. Pour out your love and your comfort on his family, on his church,
and on his friends. May Christ be exalted in our lives as He was in Dana’s.
Todd
As I’ve been reading so many of the memories of Dana that people have posted here and on Facebook, it’s so apparent that his legacy was of a man who passionately loved God and others. Dana was three years younger than me, and that definitely makes me think about eternity, but even more so about the impact of one’s life. In his 56 years of living, Dana impacted more people for Christ than most people who live decades longer. What an amazing home going he must be experiencing, and even through he is not here, his legacy of faithful living will keep bearing fruit and exalting Christ. May his family, friends, and church treasure the precious memories of Dana as they walk through a time of grieving and healing.
You just brought tears to my eyes man. That’s the guy we all loved and respected. Thanks for posting this. Bless ya buddy.
Dear Todd,
You don’t know me, but I “know” you because of Kevin Carroll. The words you wrote for Dana Key are priceless. He definitely leaves a void. When his name is brought to mind, I pray you’ll be reminded of all the wonderful things he did while on this earth. May God richly bless your ministry! Love to you…
Thank you for sharing this Todd. I’m so glad you personally knew Dana, that must be awesome! Keep playing your style of music and lyrics, they are one of a kind in this day and age and mean so much to so many of us! I’m off to dig out my favorite Degarmo & Key tape, blow out the dust in the ‘ghetto-blaster’ and introduce D&K to my 5 year old daughter. She’s totally not a Casual Christian and I’m excited to see how she responds to their music. She danced all night at City of Grace in Mesa when we took her to see you back in Feb. The moment she hears your guitar, she knows it’s your song on the radio. Thank you again for sharing about Dana, wish I would have been able to attend his church. But I do have great memories of my teen years and rockin’ out to his tunes. God bless.
*Amen*
I am also glad Dana saw “something of value in you.” He helped give your ministry to the world…. which has, I am sure, helped heal many people….as it has me. He sounds like a wonderful friend to you and I am sorry for your loss as well as his family.
I never knew nor heard of this guy…but you make me wish I had.
What an example…
Todd, I am thankful the Lord blessed this world with such pure light that shined from Dana! And I am so grateful that Dana saw God’s light in you! I doubt I, or many others, would have had the privilege of hearing your music and being touched so deeply by it if Dana hadn’t recognized how the Lord was using you. I thank God that Dana had a soft heart that reached out to you, and to so many others. I pray God will wrap His healing arms around you and all who are grieving for Dana, and that all who have been touched by him will continue to let the love Dana gave them to flow freely to everyone they meet. And may the seeds of love that have been, are being, and will be shared continue to grow and reproduce!
I remember seeing D and K in Toronto and at many other concerts. I always felt Dana was a real Christian and was a true example to many people. I loved D and K and especially Dana. I will personally miss him as the world will too. I’m so glad I’ll see him again someday. I will remember his family in my prayers.
Ernie
Todd,
I didn’t know Dana, but I know what he saw in you. I can pray thanks for Dana for encouraging you to share your music with a wider audience. You impact my life with your music in much the same way that Dana impacted yours. How blessed I feel when I listen to your music and it allows me to spend time with my Lord in a deeply personal way. Thank you, God, for blessing Todd and Dana with each other’s friendship, as you and I were, are, and continue to be reunited thanks to Todd’s music.
Thanks Todd for your words. The cassets I of D&K have all the lettering off, the only way I know what tape it is by the cover. I grew up listening to these guys. His ministry like Keith Greens will have a lasting impact on all of us. Thanks again for sharing and some day we who follow Jesus will ROCK heaven for all eternity! PTL
